If it hadn't been for his brother, Matthew would never have taken a second glance at the amount of death that happened in war-zones all over the world. Unfortunately, his brother often stood in the middle of it. Whatever the reason his brother saw for it to be that way, he hadn't a clue, but that was neither here nor there.
So far, his experiments were fine, just as he had planned. They often were being test ran in a controlled co-ops mission where that nasty little sense o flight or fight was in the way. They really hadn't been able to test the jump starting of the heart as shooting someone in the heart was frowned upon in many, many social groups and well, while Matthew wasn't opposed to it, people around him were. So he could work from afar and see if he gets it right when the time came.
But, back to the present, were yes, he showed no sign of being tired but boy did he know from experience (The kind where he was walking down the stairs) that looking tired and your brain demanding sleep as a result of your genetic code were two different things. "Let's not talk about that option but instead switch my patches. Cody or Lily normally make sure I do it, but both of them are off ship." Generally they would watch over him to assure that he didn't pass out while they switched the patches.
A pale hand held the patch forward before pulling back and taking off his lab coat. It was hard to place the patch on the base of his spine when he had the large white cloth on him. "If you would?" he asked and placed the patch in Ivan's large hands.

As his fingers closed around the patch, Ivan made a mental note to investigate Matthew's experiments further; just for curiosity's sake. Once that note was mentally filed he allowed himself to appreciate the sight of Matthew removing his lab coat and shirt.
'How funny, that our roles are now reversed,' he thought, with the faint twitch of a smile. Matthew was smaller than he was. His arms and shoulders were pale and slim. Ivan's gaze dipped to the base of Matthew's spine where a worn, used patch had started to come unstuck from his skin, just above the hem of his trousers.
He reached for the used patch, his fingers brushing the skin as he peeled it away. Ivan quickly prepared the fresh patch and set it over Matthew's skin. It was not hard to get the placement right, the old patch had left a ring of dirty adhesive. Ivan felt Matthew's body jerk forward slightly as he pressed his hand against the patch, making sure it was firmly attached.

"I think you should refrain from com-ah!" a moan ripped through his mouth as the unnaturally cold hand pressed to his worn spine. He arched forward and felt the hand follow. "those things."
He then pulled away and pulled the shirt back over his head. He could feel the jolt of the chemicals in the patch shooting up his spine. Well at least he knew when he was about to pass out, the patch would always send that jolt to his mind. Nevertheless he wasn't allowed to stop his body from rolling with the chemical's path. He closed his eyes and sighed with happiness. "Thank you."

Ivan frowned slightly as Matthew rushed to put on his shirt. He smiled slightly as Matthew closed his eyes, luxuriating in the effect of the chemicals. The thoughts in his head clicking away like the little wheels of a complex machine.
"You're welcome," he said. "I am glad to aid in your relief."

Lavender eyes opened and focused behind lens upon the taller blond. "'Aid in your relief?' Could you sound any more military?" He asked the other as he folded his arms before his chest. He hadn't put on his coat once more nor really fixed anything else. "I am not a soldier -nor will never be one- so I would appreciated it if you did not take that mannerism and tone with me."

Ivan chuckled and leaned against the wall again, his arms crossed. "Why do you let it offend you so? You are working in the wrong space station if it does." He tilted his head to the side. "I could argue that it is in my nature and that I am on duty now. But I am curious, what would you like me to say?"
He felt something constrict in his stomach, twisting in anticipation and anxiety. Sometimes Ivan surprised himself with his occasional dabbling in foolishness.
'At least I can be confident in my ability to control my expression,' he thought.

"I'm only here because my brother is, when he's transferred to a different station, so will I." He stated, as he had many, many times before to many, many different people. At this point he would assume that it was common knowledge that he frowned upon being treated like a military unit, refused to be such (hence why you found Lily going into the battle field, not him if his brother wasn't involved,) and over all made it his case and point that he was here for the funds to research and play medical doctor for those who needed it. No more, no less. "I do not care if you're on duty, you stepped into my lab so you will refer to me as your college by last name or first name as a friend. If your name is not Cody or Alfred, refrain to from calling me 'Mattie' as only someone close to me can."
His tone was strict and much like a teacher on the first day of school. He watched the other's face carefully. It would be hard to get anything past the blonde doctor. "Pet names also work, but I'm not sure how I will react to them, so bare with me."

He really wasn't surprised by the declaration and took it without so much as a twitch. When Matthew had finished his tirade, two spots of color glowing on his pale cheeks. Ivan released a small huff, half a quiet laugh, half a sigh.
"I hope I have not given you offense by calling you other than Matthew, or Doctor Williams," he said. "And do not snap at me. As I make allowances for you, I hope you will reciprocate. I have spent about a decade and a half conversing in this manner, this whole organization is rife with political creatures," his mouth twisted slightly in disgust. "It is a part of my nature and difficult to completely do away with."
He hesitated a moment as another thought occurred to him. A small line of confusion appeared between his eyebrows. "Have we become so intimate to use pet names?"

Matthew rolled his eyes at the taller man's words. He didn't care that it was a habit. The form of talk Ivan often used on other people sickened him. He didn't like Maria talking that way wither. Alfred never did and he was very high up on the military pole. "Allowances? Elaborate."
He then lofted his own brow. He didn't think it was a very intimate to be given a nickname. Pet name, nickname what was the difference? "I'm not sure, are you up for such an offer or would that be too much for your military mind?"

Ivan shrugged. "I have a good education; I may as well use it," he said. "As I have demonstrated, my vocabulary is substantial, I'm sure I could come up with something. Besides, it is almost like a code, no?
"However, your declaration that only your brother and Cody Casida may call you 'Mattie', a diminutive of your full name, suggests that to use it demands a close relationship. That is what I am curious about." Ivan fix his gaze on Matthew.
"Do we have a relationship like that?"

Matthew hummed happily at the mention of the two men he had said the names of before. They did make him happy. He was content before the next words were processed by his brilliant mind. The blonde lofted a brow and he moved back some with a large sigh. "They call me 'Mattie' because they're are my family, or in Cody's case very close to it."(Whoa man, I think Cody just got friend-zoned.)
The scientist then looked behind the Russian and licked his lips. "I wasn't aware we had a relationship at all. I wonder what you would call ours had we one."

(Uh-oh, poor Cody. Also: oh, shit, what's behind Ivan?)
At Matthew's glance Ivan spared a part of his attention on the door to his right. It had not opened and he could faintly hear the sound of people walking and talking through the wall. He knew he should back off. This was highly unprofessional. He judged that they only stood a hand's width apart. It was probably a good thing that Ivan had big hands.
He smiled slightly and inclined his head toward Matthew, the rest of his body remaining still. "We are at the very least friends, of course," he said. "That is something."

(FFfft Iunno, Matthew zones out like whoa.)
The blonde blinked at the words and he offered half a smile. He then shrugged and subconsciously moved towards the spot Ivan left. They were still about an Ivan hand apart by the time he stopped adjusting. Okay, maybe less because now lavender eyes had to look up at the other and his neck tilted slightly back. The voices fell on muffled ears as nothing but the beeps of the lab and roaring of blood through his ears really spoke to Matthew.
"Friends? I suppose that is a thing. I don't really do well with friends. They'll eventually bore me. You have yet to bore me." And honestly, he wasn't sure that it ever happen. Ivan never bored him. Irked him to the point that he said he was bored of him yes, but never truly bored.

(Oh, okay, because it would be just Ivan's luck that someone came in and found them in this compromising position. Speaking of which, Ivan may be locking the door here in a few moments)
Ivan leaned down, smiling slightly. It was even a genuine smile that reached his eyes. "I'm glad that I have not become predictable. Monotony is such a deadening trait."
His smile widened. "And I'm sure I can rely on you to tell me if for some reason I cease to excite you."

"If I ever spoke of you failing to exciting, I'm a filthy liar. You are very, very entertaining and I rather enjoy that. It's much of a relief since so few can produce such results." Matthew's voice was final with his assessment and his eyes were locked onto Ivan's slightly darker ones. "My one true and pure complaint about you is your height."
Seriously, all the men in his life, save Yao....Okay so all the men in his life he would look for to bed were far taller than him and it royally pissed him off. Why were they gifted with height while he was among the shortest on the ship? Or perhaps that's why he was attracted to them. The world would never know if he really just fancied those who towered over him or that the ones he did keep an eye on happened to be larger than he himself.
